6 Style Tips For Choosing The Perfect Vintage Outfit with Metallic Hues
I LOOOVE metallics! Of all colours and all shades. From Gold and Silver to Bronze and Copper, adding metallics to your outfit will always make a bold statement. We’re seeing on-trend pieces come up a lot across all designer runways and in your favourite shops. But can we successfully create an outfit using multiple layers of metallics? Definitely, we can try…and here’s how:
- Metallics come in many shades. They can be used in sequins, embroidery and embellishment to add glimmer to any colour palette. For GOLD, pair a vintage shimmering backless sequins cashmere knit halter dress with nothing. Period. It stands alone. It’s long to the ankle and quite dramatic with bronze or darker skin. Slim or voluptuous, show off your body type as the knit is very forgiving. Use jewelry sparingly as the mini sequins add plenty of shimmer all over. This vintage Donna Karan piece is totally luxurious and sophisticated. Flawless. Timeless. Elegant. If necessary add a boyfriend white tuxedo Military jacket and slicked back hair. It’s totally unexpected but works.
- We like the idea of layering with metallics in different textures. This works great when you add a vintage SILVER Isabel Marant brocade jacket to a vintage GOLD lame lurex geometric batwing blouse and staple layers of different metallic necklaces, especially ethnic or antiques; the dull finish of antique metals tone down the brightness of it all into a polished layered look with men's wear trousers or our vintage black wool twill circle skirt. I almost always add an African fabric OBI – the GOLD tone in it, though muted, echoes the gold throughout especially at the waist for definition. - Create some cohesion with your outfit using multiple stripes and geometric patterns of GOLD SILVER or BRONZE. This vintage outfit is pretty daring. - One more: I almost missed one luxury gem vintage Dries Van Noten GOLD sheer knit. It packs a punch on 2 counts; it is both a subtle knit of sheer GOLD yarn, but the sparkle metallics come from the use of COBALT BLUE, RUBY, and CRYSTAL ornamental gems. It is a superb unique piece incorporating metallic gems on all fronts. Both the knit and the delicate embellishment are especially daring with the keyhole back neckline closure and front scoop neck.
- Lastly: when in doubt a metallic vintage 2-tone wing tip says it all. The BEST– especially comfortable for all types of dancing – are these neo-vintage jazz shoes. They are new and custom-made in Poland so naturally took forever to get to us here but they have truly shocked our closet and are loved but unworn (size 39) as they fit narrow and a wee bit too small. The SILVER leather is absolutely brilliant, matched with black suede.
